What DIY avoids (and what it doesn’t):
DIY arrowroot dry shampoo avoids:
aerosol propellants
denatured alcohol
added fragrance (unless you add essential oils)
But DIY can still cause issues if:
you apply too much (buildup, dull roots)
you use irritating add-ins (some essential oils, cinnamon)
you have scalp conditions (psoriasis/seb derm) and need medicated care

All are shake + apply simple.
Option 1: Basic (best for most hair types)
Ingredients
1/4 cup arrowroot powder
1–2 tsp kaolin clay (optional but great for oily scalp)
5–10 drops essential oil (optional: lavender, rosemary, peppermint)
Make
Mix powders in a bowl.
Add essential oils (if using) and stir really well.
Funnel into a shaker jar.
Use
Apply to roots only, wait 1–2 minutes, then brush or towel-blast your roots and rub in.
Option 2: Brunette / Dark Hair (no white cast)
Ingredients
1/4 cup arrowroot
1–2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder (start with 1 Tbsp)
Optional: 1 tsp bentonite or kaolin clay
Make/Use: Same as above. Add more cocoa if you want it darker.
Option 3: Red Hair
Ingredients
1/4 cup arrowroot
1–2 tsp cinnamon
1–2 tsp cocoa powder (optional to deepen)(Cinnamon can be irritating for some—patch test.)
Best containers (easy + mess-free)
Powder shaker jar (spice jar style)
*I like the above. Then, I use a make up brush to put on my roots. I usually apply before I go to bed. Rubbing in just like you are shampooing your hair. Finishing by brushing through my hair.
Empty dry shampoo shaker
Or a makeup brush stored in a jar (dip + tap)
Pro tips so it looks good
Apply at night or 10 minutes before you need to look fresh.
Use a small fluffy makeup brush for the cleanest application.
If you overdo it: blast with a dry towel, then brush.
Quick safety notes
Don’t inhale powders—apply gently (not over your face).
Avoid essential oils if you have a sensitive scalp or are prone to irritation.
