If ranch dressing is a staple in your kitchen, making it at home is one of the simplest ways to upgrade both ingredient quality and cost. This homemade avocado oil ranch dressing is creamy, classic, and made with real ingredients—no preservatives, no refined oils, and no unnecessary additives.
Homemade Avocado Oil Ranch Dressing Recipe Ingredients
½ cup avocado oil
½ cup full-fat Greek yogurt (or sour cream for a more traditional ranch)
¼ cup buttermilk (or milk of choice for thinner consistency)
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1–2 tablespoons fresh dill, finely chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried)
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
1 tablespoon fresh chives, finely chopped
1 teaspoon lemon juice (or apple cider vinegar)
½ teaspoon fine sea salt, adjust to taste
¼ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise and Greek yogurt until smooth.
Slowly add the buttermilk, stirring until you reach your desired consistency.
Add garlic powder, onion powder, herbs, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
Refrigerate for 30–60 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to fully develop.
Consistency Options
Pourable dressing: Add 1–2 tablespoons additional buttermilk
Thick ranch dip: Reduce liquid or add more yogurt
Why I Make Ranch Dressing at Home Instead of Buying It
Many conventional ranch dressings, including Hidden Valley, are designed for long shelf life and consistent flavor rather than ingredient quality. A typical bottle contains refined seed oils (such as soybean or canola oil), added sugars, flavor enhancers, stabilizers, and preservatives.
While these ingredients are allowed in food products, frequent consumption of ultra-processed oils and additives can reduce overall diet quality. Cleaner store-bought brands made with avocado oil exist, but they often come with a significantly higher price tag for everyday use.
Making ranch dressing at home offers a practical middle ground: better fats, simpler ingredients, and more control—without the premium cost.
Ingredient Comparison: Store-Bought vs Homemade Ranch:
Typical Store-Bought Ranch
Refined seed oils (soybean, canola, blends)
Added sugar or corn syrup
Modified starches or gums
Preservatives for shelf stability
Artificial or “natural” flavorings
Minimal herb content
Homemade Avocado Oil Ranch
Avocado oil–based mayonnaise
Real dairy (Greek yogurt, sour cream, buttermilk)
Fresh or dried herbs
Lemon juice or vinegar
No preservatives or stabilizers
Why this matters: Homemade ranch uses recognizable, minimally processed ingredients and higher-quality fats, making it easier to align everyday condiments with a whole-food approach.
Price Comparison: Is Homemade Ranch Cheaper?
Option | Approximate Cost | Cost per Serving |
Conventional bottled ranch | $3–5 per bottle | ~$0.30–0.40 |
Avocado-oil store-bought ranch | $7–10 per bottle | ~$0.70–1.00 |
Homemade avocado oil ranch | ~$6–8 per batch | ~$0.20–0.30 |
While homemade ranch requires a small upfront ingredient investment, it typically yields more servings at a lower per-use cost, especially if you already cook at home regularly.
