It provides a platform for individuals to challenge themselves, gro

5 things to remember when learning how to teach breath connection in vinyasa yoga.
INHALES are cued when we are lengthening the body. For example, we cue an INHALE when we come into urdvha hastasana (mountain pose). Or we cue INHALE when we are lengthening the spine before coming into a twisting posture. Elongating actions require an INHALE breath. EXHALES are cued when we are folding or twisting. For example, we cue an EXHALE when coming into uttanasana (forward fold). The exhale helps us create more space and fold into this posture. Same idea with pa

You are only as young as your spine!
I am not sure who said this first, but my husband says it often, and he is absolutely correct. "You are only as young as your spine." Did you know that nearly 3 out of 10 U.S. adults – 72.3 million people – currently suffer from chronic low back pain, surpassing the number of Americans who have arthritis, diabetes, or heart disease, according to a large new Harris Poll. Aug 11, 2022 That is a big number, and the reasons are pretty obvious. Sitting too long and not moving e

Techniques and exercises to step through from Downward facing dog to Low lunge. *30 minute practice
There are several exercises that can help yoga students improve their ability to step forward into a low lunge from a downward-facing dog. The basic transition goes like this: Starting in a downward-facing dog. Inhale as you lift your right leg high into a three-legged dog (and to get more height, come onto the toes of the left foot). Exhale as you draw the right knee toward your chest (Hug the knee actively and round the upper back to create more space to step through).

Why Sitting Is Draining Your Body—and How Workplace Yoga Can Reverse It.
Trouble with sitting too much- Corporate Wellness and Yoga The Hidden Cost of Extended Sitting in the Workplace Modern employees sit for hours—at desks, in meetings, during virtual calls—rarely aware of the toll this stillness takes on the body. Sitting positions the spine vertically against gravity without providing any true relief. Several small stabilizing muscles in the lower back must stay engaged for long periods just to keep you upright. Over time, these muscles fatigu

Identifying Pelvic tendencies and excessive posterior tilt in yoga and everyday life.
Written by: Marda Zechiel -E-RYT 500, YACEP and Low Carb Health Coach The cue to “tuck your tailbone” in Anjaneyasana (Crescent or high lunge) or Utkatasana (Chair pose) is not a cue that yoga teachers should use to address an entire class. If a person with a tendency toward a posterior tilting pelvis -also called thoracic kyphosis (think cowgirl/boy butt) is told this cue it will only make that tendency worse. The goal is to find a neutral pelvis with core engagement so

Breath Connected Movement
If you or your students have trouble connecting with your breath, it is no surprise. The hardest thing to “get” in a vinyasa yoga class is the breath connection whether you are holding a pose or moving from one to the next. Cuing and practicing the breath in and through postures is one of the hardest concepts to grasp. The breath anchors our practice and once we understand this we can utilize it on and off the mat. If you came to your mat for the first time as a physical pr

Try out these five vinyasa variations and re-ignite your breath
I hope you are all staying safe and sane! For me, I really need the freedom to breathe and there is nothing better than getting outside in a favorite space to feel the freedom of taking full deep breaths without fear to do so. A true mind-body reset. Find a safe space and take the mask off to breathe fully and move with freedom with these Sun A / vinyasa variations. Each variation is in this video- Vinyasa Variations with a timestamp (next to each variation below) for when

Why are dumbbells such an important tool for your fitness goals and health?
When we think of weight training we most likely think about weight machines. The problem with weight machines is there is a set range of motion available and a singular plane of movement working one muscle group and neglecting others. Also, weight machines are not as joint friendly as dumbbells. Dumbbells allow movement all around the joint creating greater strength and stability. Dumbbells offer many benefits beyond the machines. They help our muscles work together and hel

Posture 411: Conquering Rounded Shoulders & Forward Head Position
GOALS: To correct rounded shoulders (kyphosis), forward head posture (FHP), and strength/mobility imbalances in the thoracic spine—ultimately improving posture, reducing pain, and decreasing fatigue. Correcting rounded shoulders is not as simple as “standing up straight.” If you struggle with this posture pattern, it likely developed over years of technology use, stress, poor ergonomics, and muscular imbalance. Whether you're a yoga practitioner, instructor, fitness enthusias
